Venur is a village that is located in the Dakshina Kannada District(Mangalore District) of the State of Karnataka. The place was once a center for Jainism and there are a few interesting sites that are located in and around the village. It is a small village and it is located along the Karkala to Dharamsthala route. The place is located along the banks of the River Phalguni and it is known for its peaceful and serene environment. The village is famous for a statue of Lord Gomateshwara also known as Bhagawan Bhahubuli. The statue was carved from a single rock and stands at a height of 38 feet. The monolith was made during the time of Timmana Ajila who a Jain ruler. The statue is around 400 years old and was made by Jakaanachari. A head anointing festival takes place from time to time.

Venur was once the capital city of a Jain Dynasty called Ajila Dynasty. These Ajila kings ruled the place from the 12th century to the 17th century. There are many traces of their rule that can be seen in the surrounding areas. There is a Mahadeva Temple that is located in the village and is an interesting place to visit.

How to Reach Venur

Venur is located around 50 km from the city of Mangalore. There are a few options that travelers can choose from to reach the place from Mangalore. The nearest domestic airport is located in Mangalore(IXE). There are taxis that are available from the airport to the village. They cost around Rs 700 for the trip. Devanahalli Airport at Bangalore is the closest international airport and it is located around 290 km from the village. Prepaid taxis are available from the airport to Venur. Taxis cost around Rs 3500 for the trip and there are SUV’s and sedans that are available.

Government buses are available from Mangalore to Venur. These can be boarded from the main bus terminus and they are the cheapest option. Tickets cost around Rs 50 for the trip. Weather and Best time to Visit Venur

Venur experience tropical weather conditions with hot summers and very mild winters. Summer season is best avoided as the temperatures and humidity combine to make it extremely uncomfortable. The monsoon season brings extensive rainfall to the place and since it is located around 50 km from Mangalore, there are many similar climatic conditions between the places.

Summer season is from March to May. During this time temperatures are extremely high and humidity is around 75%. During the summer months temperatures range from a minimum of 34°C and can rise up to a maximum of 38°C. The high humidity is due to the proximity of the Arabian Ocean.

Monsoon season is from June to September. During this time the place gets extensive rainfall from the South West Monsoon. It is not advisable to visit during the monsoon season as travelling around the place is difficult. Temperatures are much lower during the monsoon months and day temperatures average around 32°C during this period.

Winter season is from the months from December to January. Winter season is the best time to visit the place and temperatures are mild. Day temperatures average around 32°C. Temperatures vary from a minimum of 25°C and a maximum of 34°C during the winter season. Light rainfall can be expected during this time as well. Best time to go to Venur is from October to January.
