Chelavara is a village in Kodagu district of Karnataka. The main attraction at Chelavara is a seasonal waterfall. Chelavara Falls is one of the most beautiful falls in Coorg district in Karnataka, India, which is located around 26 km away from Madikeri city and 16 kms from Virajpet. It will take about about 90 minutes to reach Chelvara Falls from Madikeri. Chelavara Falls is also called as Embepare by the locals meaning Tortoise Rock.
The water fall is really a wonderful view as the water gushes from the top amidst the green coffee plantation. The journey down to the Falls with only tree roots and shoots to hold on to and a huge dip on the other side is precarious to say the least. There is no proper road apart from a rough muddy trail. This could be one reason why not many travelers to Kodagu visit Chelvara Falls. But then, once you reach the falls, all these complaints shall give way to the breathtaking beauty that lies in front of you. Near to the main falls one can also find other small waterfalls, orange farms and coffee farms.
The best part of visiting Chelavara falls is that Chomakund a renowned hill is just 2 kms away from the falls. Tourists visiting Chelavara Falls will also visit Chomakund hill. Chomakund is an awesome place surrounding with lush green shrubs and trees and is almost covered in fog most of the time. One can also get a glance of the Arabian Sea from here.
