Hyundai Launched 814 CC Eon Priced at Rs 2.7 Lakhs
India’s best selling car the Maruti Alto — the cheapest at the entry level after the Tata Nano and M800 — now has competition from Hyundai Eon. Hyundai on Thursday launched the 814 cc Eon, priced between Rs 2,69,999 and Rs 3,71,869 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Hyundai has invested Rs 900 crore in developing the Eon, the company’s smallest and cheapest model globally.
The South Korean car maker aims at selling 140,000 to 150,000 cars of the new model annually. That’s less than half of the annual sales of the Alto from the Maruti stable.
Maruti sold close to 400,000 Altos in 2010-11 and has already sold 148,000 units so far this year. The 800 cc Alto is priced at Rs 2,32,247 to Rs 2,84,293. The 1,000cc Alto K-10 sells for Rs 3,04,192 to Rs 3,20,358.
Eon may take time to affect Alto’s rural markets, which are fed by Maruti’s stronger distribution network and strong brand strength built over 11 years. “The price difference of almost Rs 40,000 between Eon and Alto’s base variant could be large for rural buyers. However, most people will definitely look at it in the metros.
Hyundai claims it has added many ‘first in class’ features in every product it launches. Eon is claimed to be the first car in the segment with an airbag for the driver, leather seats and an embedded music system with USB, which the Alto does not offer.
The Alto’s mileage is claimed to be 20.2 kmpl. Hyundai claims the Eon’s is 21.1 kmpl. However, the Alto engine generates 68 horsepower; the Eon 56 horsepower.
